Thank you so much to everyone who has been in contact over the last few weeks asking when we will be back open, so I wanted to post an update from my previous post. Sadly the situation continues at the patch - hare and other wildlife damage, in addition to lack of enough rain water at the right time and challenging soil has meant that all the bulbs, tubers and seeds that we planted for the summer PYO crops have just sat there not growing as they should or have been eaten. It is not commercially viable to fence off the whole patch from the wildlife and each year the numbers of flower munchers seems to have increased! It saddens me as I had so many plans for the patch this year, and I do not easily give up on things but it is with a very heavy heart that I have decided to pass the reins back to the original owners in the hope that they have better luck with the elements and wildlife in the future. On the positive note all the pumpkin 🎃 seeds I sowed by hand seem to be doing well at the moment, so maybe something might come of that crop in late September / October - watch this space. I would like to say a HUGE BIG THANK YOU so much to everyone who has visited the patch in the last 18 months and picked flowers and those of you who have come to one of my pop-ups at the patch too - I really appreciate your support 💕 Have a good rest of your summer’s 🌻🌻🌻

A crop update 🌻 Thank you so much to the everyone who has asked in the last few weeks when we will be back open. For the time being not at the moment - yet again this year the weather that we have had over the last few months or so and the wildlife are proving very challenging. Anyone who drives past the patch regularly and peers through the hedge will have seen that there is no colour of flowers in the field and by now there should be. As soon as we have more news we will let you know.

Not the most exciting / pretty post I know but it is exciting to me - today I hand-planted 700 pumpkin seeds with the hope that by October we will have a small but perfectly formed PYO pumpkin 🎃 patch. I hope you understand as I don’t want you to make a trip to The Patch and not find any colour. WIND DAMAGE 💨 welcome to the world of outdoor grown flowers !! I have explained above what has happened but there are still plenty of stems to be picked - fingers crossed tomorrow will be a better weather day 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

Over the last few weeks we have gained quite a number of new followers - thank you 🙏🏻 so much. I thought I ought to introduce or re-introduce myself. My name is Paula Edgington - I took on The Patch last year in its third year. However, it is a team effort I couldn’t manage the land without the help of my partner, his daughter and their team. I am also a studio florist - I own @pop_upblooms which I started back in 2018 when I lived near Ely, Cambridgeshire. I am re-establishing my floristry business locally as we recently moved to Colsterworth - so only 10 mins away from The Patch which is great. I am very much enjoying the whole PYO patch management - I love being outside, I love meeting those of you who come to PYO and the pop-ups that I hold - but I don’t love what the weather has thrown at us recently and the challenge with the furry wildlife in the field that nibble and munch their way through the crops !!! The patch is run on an honesty basis so thank you for visiting I really appreciate it. I have some exciting plans for The Picking Patch this year which I hope come to fruition - these include a flowery photo booth, more installations to encourage more pollinators, birds and insects into the field and also flowery workshops. A little about me in no particular order:- 🌷I have worked in the flowers and plants industry for over 35 years including in retail and on the commercial growing side of things too 🍫 I am ratter partial to chocolate 🐓 I have been a chicken mummy for many years but sadly my last little girl - Hebe, pictured here - went to chicken heaven a few weeks ago, she was the grand old age of 8. Gladioli and dahlias - with all the excitement of opening the patch for the Spring season last week I realised I hadn’t updated you that also last week the dahlias and gladioli were planted . 🌹We are reopening for the 2024 season this Wednesday 27th March 🎉 you can find us just off the A151 just outside Corby Glen, we can be found on Google Maps and if you use what3words the location is PETAL.ACTED.CARESSING We planted some early season tulips last Autumn meaning we are open two weeks earlier than last year - after these tulips have been picked we might need to close for a few days before the next tulips are ready so please be sure to check we are open before you leave home. For those of you who have not been before but also a reminder to regular ‘pickers’ please see some useful information below:- 🌷The Picking Patch is ‘self-service’ and therefore unmanned 🌷 We will be open from ⏰ 9am to 6pm every day whilst there are flowers to pick 🌷 You can pay by 💷 cash using the cash box by the exit or by PayPal, there is a QR code you can scan to pay via your PayPal account. You will need the PayPal App on your phone beforehand. The QR code can also be found via the link in the bio on Instagram 🌷 The Picking Patch is a field and therefore there is uneven ground underfoot, so please wear suitable 🥾 footwear and take care whilst walking around. 🌷The site is also quite 🌬windy, even on a day where light winds are forecast, so wrap up warm 🌷There are no 🚻 toilet facilities on site so please ensure you are ‘comfortable’ before you arrive 🌷We provide secateurs ✂️ for you to borrow during your visit. Please return them to the basket provided when you leave but as these are sharp please take care when using them and do not let children use them without adult supervision 🌷£ Prices per stem can be found on notices around the field by the crops that are ready to pick and by the cash box. That’s a Sunflower 🌻 Wrap I am afraid - the weather has done it’s worst but at least there have been some 🌻 to pick that the hares didn’t eat !! 🎃 Pumpkins are not just for Halloween 👻 !!! Why not do this simple project at home Step 1 - take one 🎃 cut the top off and hollow it out Step 2 - find a suitable container - like a large empty jam jar or a wide bottomed plastic bottle cut down to size and put it inside your hollowed out 🎃 and fill with 💧 Step 3 - take the leaves off of the 🌻🌻🌻🌻 you have picked @thepickingpatchuk 😀😀😀 Step 4 - cut a few stems from your garden or foraged stems (ensure you have permission first) of foliage and berries, for example Step 5 - get creative - I normally put some of the foliage stems in first, cut down to a suitable size, and then start to add the 🌻 then add a few more of the other stems and keep adding until it looks nice and full Step 5 - display it somewhere cool out of the sun Step 6 - don’t forget to top up the container regularly with 💧- 🌻are thirsty things #pumpkinvase #funwithpumpkins #sunflowervase #pyoflowers #pyosunflowers #corbyglen #pyo #thingstodoonarainyday #craftproject #sunnysunflowers

You can find us just off the A151 just outside Corby Glen, we can be found on Google Maps and if you use what3words the location is PETAL.ACTED.CARESSING For those of you who have not been before but also a reminder to previous ‘pickers’ please see some useful information below:- 🌻The Picking Patch is ‘self-service’ and therefore unmanned 🌻 The Patch will be open every day whilst there are sunflowers to pick 🌻You can pay by 💷 cash using the cash box by the exit or by PayPal, there is a QR code you can scan to pay via your PayPal account. 🌻A sunflower update 🌻 We are having one last attempt for this season to have a crop of sunflowers to pick. Yesterday we planted the first planting of three plantings over the next few weeks. We are going to do as much as we can to try and protect the plants from the ravenous hares🐇 (there is no brown hare emoji!) Fingers crossed🤞🏻 we are able to achieve one last hurrah of 🌻for this year. The picking patch has pretty much 99.9% been eaten by hares, or suffered from the long dry period, and so I am sorry we currently have nothing worth opening for, only a tiny handful of stems, so let’s hope that this last hurrah is successful In the meantime I am thinking of holding a few pop up’s through the summer with Lincolnshire grown sunflowers and other flowers - would this be something you would be interested in ? 🌻A PICKING PATCH UPDATE🌻 A number of you have kindly been in touch to ask when we will be open again for picking. In truth I am not sure yet - as I said in my previous post we are facing a number of challenges at the patch :- - 💧lack of rain for many weeks means that apart from the weeds, which I swear would survive any harsh condition and still grow, the sunflower 🌻 seeds that we planted have struggled to grow - Then when they have managed to push through and despite protecting them early on the hares🐇 have had a field day and continue to do so eating them - They have eaten all but a few of the sunflowers, most of the gladioli and a fair few of the dahlias, it is worse this year I am told than last year. - It is so disappointing and frustrating - We will give it one last go at getting some sunflowers in the ground this week and somehow protecting them from being eaten in a commercially viable way, fingers crossed that there will be something to enjoy picking late summer. So thank you for asking when we are opening and for your support, as soon as I know if we have a pickable crop I will let you know please keep your eyes 👀 on here. In the meantime I am planning some possible Picking Patch activities for September.

🐝 Today is World Bee Day 🐝 As we know bees and other pollinators perform a fundamental process in ecosystems, both in the natural world and within agriculture. At the Picking Patch we have created bug hotels for insects and pollinators and other beasties 🐜 🕷 🐞 but can also provide homes for solitary bees and bumblebees 🐝 The field margins, the areas all the way around the field, provide a diverse range of habitats and also pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators. In addition, once the sunflowers 🌻 in particular are flowering in the patch, the bees just love the centres of the sunflowers, they are made up of small tubular flowers which contain pollen and nectar. We have some news - the first peony ‘pop-ups’ of the season are starting this week🎉 The peony season is a little behind where it was last year but the harvest has now started. Whilst we are between crops at the Picking Patch I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself, the new face behind the patch. My name is Paula Edgington and it is a privilege to have taken on the patch this year. I have lots of plans and ideas but most importantly I would like to thank the previous owners who started the picking patch three years ago and have done an amazing job in setting it up and establishing it. A little about me - I have spent pretty much all my working life (which is a fair few years now!) in the flowers and plants industry, the majority of the time on the technical side of the industry (so like the work a food technologist does but for flowers and plants) in the head office teams of retailers; also in commercial production; in addition, as a consultant in the wider industry (which I still do), on wider industry strategic projects and industry certification schemes. I also have a studio floristry business popupblooms.com @pop_upblooms which I started in 2018. I currently flower weddings and events and take workshops - all of which I love doing. I also occasionally ‘pop-up’ I use seasonal, British grown ingredients whenever the seasons allow. I also use sustainable mechanics in my work - so no single use plastic or floral foam. The Picking Patch is a very exciting new adventure for me. A Picking Patch update- please listen to or read the captions on the video but the tulips are sitting there looking at us but there is so little colour on the buds and where there is the stems are so short. So unfortunately at the moment we are not going to be able to open this weekend - if something miraculous happens I will update you . We are now in the process of creating Stanley and Blossom- charity shops have been rummaged through, as have wardrobes for clothes not worn anymore and as I type Blossom is being sewn together! This is Stanley our resident scarecrow. He has diligently watched over the field for the last few years but he is feeling a little faded and weather beaten now and so we have decided to give him a makeover. We asked children at Corby Glen Community Primary School if they would like to send in ideas for a Stanley Mark II plus for a companion for Stanley, Blossom. This weekend we have been looking through the entries and there are some super ideas - now we have the task of choosing just two!! Once we decide on two you will find me scouring charity shops for lookalike clothing to recreate the designs for when we are back open in April. Autumnal air 🍁 Where did summer go eh? In July we thought the field was totally fried 🍳, however with a little bit of rain 🌧 the flowers burst back into life. We’ve been off the radar as we thought we would be closing but throughout September the gladioli 🌿, dahlia 🌺 and even some very! late sunflowers 🌻 kept coming through. Thank you so much to all the regulars and locals who have kept turning up despite our radio 📻 silence. The field is mostly now past it’s best, apart from a final flurry of colour 🌈 from the Dahlia 🌸, so we’ve decided that we will be closing the gate for the winter next week. If you’re coming to www.sheepfair.co.uk - Corby Glen Sheep Fair 🐑 this week do pop up for the final pickings. Some of you will note that we haven’t grown any pumpkins 🎃 this year, the main reason is we’ve been busy growing a little pumpkin of our own 👶🏼 and so our time is about to become very precious. Dehydrated Dahlias 🌸 2022 has not been very kind to the flower field 🫣 and nature has well and truly won 🥇. The plants certainly haven’t liked the recent heatwave 🌞 and the stony soil just hasn’t held the water 💧. The weeds 🌱 on the other hand are doing exceptionally well! Coupled with the fact that our resident family of hares 🐇 have taken to nibbling on our sunflowers 🌻, we’ll be honest, the flower field could look better. There’s been plenty of learnings for 2023… Despite this… we’ve now reopened the gate for our summer flowers, and there are plenty dahlia 🌺 and gladioli 🌿 to pick, however, throughout this period we will only have limited sunflowers. A REQUEST - Please please please do not smoke 🚬 or have any naked flames when you’re in the field or car park. The heatwave has caused a major fire 🔥 risk and the consequences for nature and our project are unimaginable. Best laid plans 😑 We’re devastated for those of you that couldn’t get to the field today. Despite continued assurance that things would change, the road closures ⛔️ were still in place and we understand it wasn’t clear that you could still access the field and the pop up. We feel bad for anyone who had a wasted trip 🚙 and are thankful for those who persevered the diversion 🔜. On a positive note, and due to your kind messages and support, we’ve made the decision that we will run an additional (and we promise the final!) peony pop up 🌸 in the first half of next week. Bank holiday blossoms 🌺 Our final peony pop up 🌸 at The Picking Patch will be tomorrow (Thursday 2nd June) from 4-6pm at The Picking Patch field. We will have our final assortment of pre-cut peony 🌸 bunches for 2022. All bunches 💐 will be £5 for 10 stems. Payment via cash or PayPal. The field will also be open for allium 🟣 and iris 🌿 picking during this time. Pick your own flowers 💐 Our pick your own flower field at The Picking Patch, Corby Glen is awash with the vibrant colours of tulips 🌷and daffodils 🌼. The gate is open ⏰ 9-6 (as a minimum) over the coming weeks until they are all finished. The field is an open area, available for you to roam, look at the different colours 🌈 and types of flowers 🌺 and learn about wildlife 🐞. It is unmanned and we operate an “honesty box” policy for payment per stem. 🌿 Unfortunately, due to hygiene reasons, no dogs 🐶 are allowed. Tulip colours 💐 This year we’ve got two different areas of tulips 😍 1️⃣ The first, like last year, are reds ❤️, yellows 💛, purples 💜, orange 🧡, and crimson 💖, all planted in long rows of the same type - all out at the moment. 2️⃣ The second, we’ve got a new area with mixed varieties and colours 🌈 - a pot luck including whites and pinks. Bloomin’ Marvellous 🌷 🐣🌹🌷 Our gate reopens tomorrow all through the Easter weekend and beyond 🌷🌹🐣 The tulips 🌷 and daffodils are enjoying the milder weather ☀️ and are ready to greet you! Here’s a few reminders about the field: 🐣 The Picking Patch field is entirely ‘self service’ so is unmanned 🐣 We are open 9-6pm every day 🐣 Payment is on exit by using the cash box or by following the instructions and using PayPal. Prices per stem are clearly displayed in the field 🐣 We are based on an agricultural field site, this means the ground underfoot is uneven so sensible footwear 🥾 is recommended especially in wet weather 🐣 There are several different varieties of flower 🌸 but they may not all be available at the time of your visit 🐣 We provide secateurs ✂️ for you to borrow to cut the flowers during your visit, these are sharp so please take care and do not let children 👧🏽 use them without adult supervision 🐣 For hygiene reasons unfortunately no dogs 🦮 are allowed on the field itself Looking forward to seeing you from 9am tomorrow 🙏🏻

Our first tulips 🌷are through and we’ve got many a daffodil 🌼 to pick! We’ll be spending this week tidying 🌪 and setting everything up ready for our first visitors 🥳 of 2022 when the gate will open on Friday morning. Sunflowers are the place to Bee!🌻🐝 Whilst we still have plenty of sunflowers available to pick, you may have noticed 👀 the earlier flowering ones have dropped their petals and look a little sad 😔 But sad they most certainly are not! They are transforming to become a vital source of food 🌱 for our birds 🦅 over the coming autumn and winter months 🍁❄️☃️. Life in Technicolour 🎨 The flower 🌺 field is awash with colours at the moment - all ready and raring to be picked by you 👋. The miniature sunflowers 🌻 are shining brightly, the gladioli have got their gladrags 👗 on, and the dahlia are having a disco 🕺🏼. As a result we’ve decided that we’ll open earlier and shut later for the next week so that you can take advantage of the beautiful flowers. Our normal hours are 10-7, but we’ll now be open from 9 until dusk.
